Starting Fotana

How do I download Fotana?

You can download Fotana and a sample album for free and get unlimited usage of all of Fotana's functions.
  • Click Download For Free.
  • Save the Fotana executable and double click on it.
  • You will see a Fotana window with a title bar and three panels.
    • The title bar across the top shows the Fotana release number and the selected album.
    • The page panel on the top right shows the selected page.
    • The clipboard panel on the bottom right shows the photos in the sample album.
    • The index panel on the left shows the album index.

How do I upgrade Fotana?

Download the latest release of Fotana, and it will automatically upgrade.

How do I start Fotana with the sample album?

Double click on the Fotana executable.

How do I start Fotana without an album?

Select Start->Programs->Fotana Album Builder.

How do I set checking for new releases on startup?

Select Options->Check For New Release to enable and disable checking for new releases on startup. Starting Fotana will check for new releases if Options->Check For New Release is checked.

How do I create a new album?

Select File->New and enter the location to save the new album.

How do I open an album?

Select File->Open and enter the location of the album to open.

How do I exit Fotana?

Select File->Exit.


Importing Photos

What photo format can Fotana import?

Fotana can import JPEG, the standard photo format. If you want to import other formats, you can try the web for programs that can convert them to JPEG.

How do I import photos that are stored on my computer?

Select File->Import Photos and enter a location or a list of locations. The photos from these locations will be imported to the clipboard.

Please note that Fotana accesses photos in the locations from which they were imported, so we recommend that you not move photos after they have been imported. If you want to move photos, you can copy the album and its photos before you move them.

How do I import photos that are stored on the web?

Select File->Import Photos From URL and enter a URL location. All JPEG photos from the URL will be imported to the clipboard.

Please note that Fotana accesses photos in the locations from which they were imported, so we recommend that you not move photos after they have been imported. If you want to move photos, you can copy the album and its photos before you move them.

How do I set the number of photos to import per page?

Select Options->Import Template and a number of photos to import per page.

How do I set import photos to go to the clipboard?

Select Options->Import Template->Clipboard.

Can I move my photos after they have been imported?

Fotana accesses photos in the locations from which they were imported, so we recommend that you not move photos after they have been imported. If you want to move photos, you can copy the album and its photos before you move them.


Editing Photos

How do I select a photo on a page?

Click on the photo.
  • The left status bar across the bottom of the Fotana window will show the attributes of the selected photo separated by semicolons.
    • Date as month/day/year separated by slashes and time as hour:minute:second separated by colons if the photo was taken by a camera that uses the EXIF standard.
    • Size M in megabytes.
    • Scale % of the original photo.
    • Brightness/contrast/saturation separated by slashes.
    • Rotation in degrees clockwise if it is different from the original photo.
  • The right status bar across the bottom of the Fotana window will show the location of the selected photo.
  • The middle of the edges of the selected photo will be highlighted in red if they have not been cropped and blue if they have been cropped.
  • The corners of the selected photo will be highlighted in red.
How do I delete a selected photo?

Select Photo->Delete.

How do I set the import template to apply on photo rotation and deletion?

Select Options->Apply Template to enable and disable applying the import template on photo rotation and deletion. When Options->Fill Template is checked, Fotana will:
  • Maximize a rotated photo to the size of the import template if the photo has not been edited.
  • Replace a deleted photo with the next photo if the next photo has not been edited in any way except rotation.
How do I rotate a selected photo?

Select Photo->Rotate Clockwise or Photo->Rotate Counter Clockwise.

How do I crop a selected photo?

Click and drag the highlighted middle of the edge you want to crop. The middle of the edge will be highlighted in red when the edge is cropped and blue when it is not cropped.

How do I scale a selected photo?

Click and drag the corner you want to scale. The left status bar across the bottom of the Fotana window will show the current scale % of the original photo.

How do I scale a selected photo to a standard photo size?
  • Select Photo->Overlay and a photo size to show and hide the overlay. The selected photo will have a white overlay that would print in the size that is checked.
  • Rotate, crop and scale the selected photo to fit the overlay.
How do I adjust the brightness of a selected photo?

Select Photo->Brightness + or Photo->Brightness -. The left status bar across the bottom of the Fotana window will show the current brightness.

How do I adjust the contrast a selected photo?

Select Photo->Contrast + or Photo->Contrast -. The left status bar across the bottom of the Fotana window will show the current contrast.

How do I adjust the saturation a selected photo?

Select Photo->Saturation + or Photo->Saturation -. The left status bar across the bottom of the Fotana window will show the current saturation.

How do I move a selected photo on a page?

Click and drag any point on the photo except the highlighted corners and middles of the edges.

How do I copy the original of a selected photo to a new location?

Select Photo->Copy Original Photo and enter a location.

How do I copy the location of a selected photo into the copy buffer?

Select Photo->Copy Photo Location.

Does editing modify the original photos?

Editing does not modify the original photos.


Editing Text

How do I select a text box on a page?

Click on the text box. The text box will be highlighted in red.

How do I add a text box to a selected page?

Select Text->Add Text to add a text box with text "Text". The new text box will be selected.

How do I delete a selected text box?

Select Text->Delete.

How do I edit the text in a selected text box?
  • Click on the text to get a blinking cursor.
  • Edit the text.
How do I scale a selected text box?

Click and drag the corner that you want to scale.

How do I set the color in a selected text box?

Select Text->Set Color and choose a color.

How do I set the text color for all pages?

Select Text->Set Color For All and choose a color.

How do I set the font in a selected text box?

Select Text->Set Font and choose a font.

How do I set the text font for all pages?

Select Text->Set Font For All and choose a font.

How do I set the style in a selected text box?

Select Text->Style and a style.

Editing Pages

How do I select a page on the page panel?
  • You can select a page on the page panel in any of the following ways:
    • Select Page->Next or Page->Prev.
    • Type the Page Down or Page Up keys.
  • The page panel will show the photos and text of the selected page. The left status bar across the bottom of the Fotana window will show the attributes of the selected page separated by semicolons.
    • Page number and [name] within square brackets.
    • Page width x height in pixels.
    • Aspect ratio of width to height.
  • The index panel will open the folder that contains the selected page and highlight the selected page.
How do I create a new page?
  • Select the page after which you want to add the new page.
  • Select Page->New Page to add a new page with name "Page". The new page will be selected.
How do I delete a selected page?

Select Page->Delete Page/Folder. If there is a photo or text on the page, you will be asked whether you want to delete the page.

What is the aspect ratio of the page panel?

The aspect ratio of the page panel is the ratio of its width to its height. By fixing the aspect ratio of the page panel, you can keep the width and height of the photos in proportion as you scale the page panel.

How do I fix the aspect ratio of the page panel?

Select Page->Fix Aspect Ratio to fix and unfix the aspect ratio of the page panel. The aspect ratio is fixed if Page->Fix Aspect Ratio is checked.

How do I set the aspect ratio of the page panel?
  • Unfix the aspect ratio if it is not already unfixed.
  • Click and drag a corner of the Fotana window to scale the page panel. The left status bar across the bottom of the Fotana window will show the width x height in pixels and the aspect ratio of the page panel.
  • Fix the aspect ratio to keep the width and height of the photos in proportion as you scale the page panel.
How do I set the aspect ratio of the page panel to my current screen?

Hold down the Control key and click on a corner of the Fotana window. The left status bar across the bottom of the Fotana window will show the aspect ratio of your current screen.

How do I scale the page panel?

Click and drag a corner of the Fotana window to scale the page panel. The left status bar across the bottom of the Fotana window will show the width x height in pixels and the aspect ratio of the page panel.

How do I maximize the size of the page panel to my current screen?

Click on the Maximize icon on the right side of the title bar across the top of the Fotana window. The page panel will be maximized on your current screen if the Maximize icon is expanded. The left status bar across the bottom of the Fotana window will show the width x height in pixels and the aspect ratio of the page panel.

How do I set the background color of a selected page?

Select Page->Set Background Color and choose a color.

How do I set the background color for all pages?

Select Page->Set Background Color For All and choose a color.

How do I view an album as a full screen slide show?

Select Page->View Slide Show. Fotana will show the album in full screen by hiding the clipboard and index panels and maximizing the page panel with fixed aspect ratio to your screen, and automatically step through the remaining pages in the album with a delay.

To manually step through the pages:
  • Type the Page Down or Space key to view the next page.
  • Type the Page Up or Backspace key to view the previous page.
To end the slide show, click on the screen.

How do I set the delay of the slide show?

Select Page->Slide Show Delay and the number of seconds to delay before stepping to the next page.

How do I set view slide show to step manually?

Select Page->Slide Show Delay->Disable.


General Editing

How do I undo an edit?

Select Edit->Undo to undo your last edit.

How do I redo an undo?

Select Edit->Redo to redo your last undo.

How do I copy a selected item?
  • Select Edit->Copy to copy the selected photo, text or page.
  • Select the page to which you want to add the copied photo or text or after which you want to append the copied page. The selected page can be in a different album.
  • Select Edit->Paste to add the copied item to the selected location.
How do I move a selected item to another page?
  • Select Edit->Cut to copy and delete the selected photo, text or page.
  • Select the page to which you want to add the copied photo or text or after which you want to append the copied page. The selected page can be in a different album.
  • Select Edit->Paste to add the copied item to the selected location.
How do I set snapping to edges of a page on moving photos and text boxes?

Select Options->Snap To Edges to enable and disable snapping to the edges of a page on moving photos and text boxes. Moving a photo or text box close to an edge of a page will snap it to the edge if Options->Snap To Edges is checked.


Using the Index

How do I select a folder?

Click on the folder icon or name. The index panel will highlight the selected folder.

How do I create a new folder?
  • Select the folder or page you want to add the new folder after.
  • Select Page->New Folder to add a new folder named "Folder". The new folder will be selected.
How do I delete a selected folder?

Select Page->Delete Page/Folder. The next page will be selected.

How do I edit the name of a folder?
  • Click twice slowly on the name of the folder to get a blinking cursor.
  • Edit the name.
How do I move a folder?

Click and drag the folder:
  • Between the items between which you want to insert it.
  • To the folder to which you want to append it.
How do I open a folder?

Click on the box to the left of the folder icon to open and close the folder. A folder is open when its box shows a minus, its icon is expanded, and its pages are shown. A folder is closed when its box shows a plus, its icon is closed, and its pages are not shown.

How do I select a page on the index panel?
  • Open the folder that contains the page.
  • Click on the page icon or name. The index panel will highlight the selected page.
How do I edit the name of a page on the index panel? The name of the page on the index panel defaults to the text in the topmost leftmost text box. To override this default:
  • Click twice slowly on the name of the page to get a blinking cursor.
  • Edit the name.
How do I move a page on the index panel?

Click and drag the page:
  • Between the items between which you want to insert it.
  • To the folder to which you want to append it.
How do I scale the index panel?

Click and drag any point across the right of the index panel to scale the index panel.

How do I hide the index panel?

Select Options->Show Index to show and hide the index panel. The index panel will be shown if Options->Show Index is checked.


Using the Clipboard

How do I move a selected photo to the clipboard?

Select Photo->Move To Clipboard.

How do I move a photo from the clipboard to a selected page?

Click on the clipboard photo to move it to the page. The new photo will be selected.

How do I delete a photo from the clipboard?

Hold down the Shift key and click on the clipboard photo.

How do I scale the clipboard panel?

Click and drag any point across the top of the clipboard panel to scale the clipboard panel.

How do I hide the clipboard panel?

Select Options->Show Clipboard to show and hide the clipboard panel. The clipboard panel will be shown if Options->Show Clipboard is checked.


Saving

How do I save a selected photo as JPEG?

Select Photo->Save Photo As JPEG and enter a location.

How do I save a selected page as JPEG?

Select Page->Save Page As JPEG and enter a location.

What is a Fotana album file?

A Fotana album file is a small file with a .abm extension that contains just the information needed to create an album by accessing the original photos in the locations from which they were imported.

An album can be emailed or otherwise shared if it is built from photos that are stored on the web or otherwise accessible. Once recipients have downloaded Fotana or otherwise started a Fotana executable on their computers, they can double click on the album and view it.

Do I have to remember to save my album?

Fotana will automatically save your album to a Fotana album file within one second of any modification, so you do not have to remember to save it.

How do I save my album to a new location?

Select File->Save As ABM and enter a location.

What is a Fotana one-click album file?

A Fotana one-click album file is a file with a .exe extension that contains a Fotana album, the photos in the album, and the Fotana executable. The photos are compressed to save storage, and the album file cannot be modified.

A one-click album can be emailed or otherwise shared. Recipients can double click on the one-click album and view it.

How do I create a Fotana one-click album?

Select File->Save As EXE and enter a location.

The .htm file can be viewed in a web browser. It shows the t.jpeg thumbnail for each page which links to the .html file for the page. The .html for each page shows the .JPEG for the page. How do I create a Fotana web album?

Select File->Save as HTML and enter a location.

How do I set the JPEG compression quality?

Select Options->JPEG Compression Quality and a compression quality.


Printing Albums

How do I set up printing?

Select File->Page Setup. Fotana will maximize the size of the page panel with fixed aspect ratio to the print page in landscape orientation.

How do I print two album pages to one print page?

Select Page->Print Two Pages To One. Fotana will maximize the size of the page panel with fixed aspect ratio to half the print page in portrait orientation and print two album pages to each print page.

How do I print two 5x7 inch album pages on 8.5x11 inch paper?
  • Set the aspect ratio to 1.4.
  • Set the left and right margins to 0.25 inch.
  • Turn on printing two pages to one.
  • Print.
How do I test printing without wasting ink?

Select File->Print Outline. Fotana will print just the outline of the photos.

How do I print an album?

Select File->Print.

How do I find the page number of a page to print?

Select the page. The page number will be shown in the left status bar across the bottom of the Fotana window.
